Our Process
Initial Contact
Your First Conversation with CB Built
Clients reach us by phone, website, text, referral, or email — and get a same-day call back directly from our team.
We start with a low-pressure conversation about goals, budget, timeline, and land. We then schedule a free in-person meeting to review ideas and ensure we’re the right fit for each other.
Clients choose CB Built early because we help with far more than building, we’ll also help guide design, budgeting, land decisions, and financing guidance if the client desires.

Pre-Construction Planning
Planning, Design & Budgeting
Already have plans?
We begin detailed estimating, value engineering, and design guidance. Real pricing is built using our in-house estimating system + subcontractor bids.
Need plans?
We coordinate design with our trusted architect (or yours) to fit your goals, land, and budget.
Need land?
We help clients find property and design a home around the site. Pre-construction includes full guidance, budgeting, early selections, and a detailed project roadmap.
Typical timeline: 1–6 months, depending on scope.
Final Pricing, Contract, and Scheduling
Final Pricing & Project Scheduling
We present a line-by-line cost breakdown in person — transparent, clear, no hidden margins.
We offer flexible contract types and tailor them to the client.
A small deposit locks in the project, and we provide estimated start and completion dates.
Our organization and proactive scheduling are key reasons our builds finish faster than many Montana builders.
Construction
Building Your Home
We begin with site prep and move into full construction with strong momentum. Because we manage the schedule full-time, not from the jobsite swinging a hammer, we keep subcontractors moving efficiently and avoid downtime.
Clients receive daily communication and are involved in walkthroughs for:
Exterior Selections
Interior Trim Details
Electrical layouts
Interior finishes
Most selections are finalized early so the project stays streamlined. Our clients consistently describe our builds as fast, organized, and easy.
Final Walkthrough & Move In
Final Walkthrough & Move-In
We complete our own punch list before the client walkthrough.
Together we review all systems, finishes, and expectations — then correct any remaining items.
On move-in day, we hand over keys in person and provide a full homeowner binder with manuals, selections, and warranty info.
We usually include a small gift as a thank-you.
A 30-day check-in ensures everything is performing smoothly.
Warranty & Ongoing Support
Warranty & Ongoing Support
Every CB Built home includes a full 1-year warranty, with direct access to us the entire time.
We check in again near month 11 to wrap up any warranty items.
Our clients keep our number forever — we remain a long-term partner, not a builder who disappears after move-in.
FAQs
Do you build more than just custom homes?
Yes. In addition to custom homes, we regularly work on multifamily and commercial projects. This includes duplexes, six-plexes, larger multifamily developments, and select commercial buildings. We often partner with investors and developers, bringing a practical, cost-conscious approach focused on long-term performance as well as quality construction.
Do you offer design-build services?
Yes. We offer design-build services and work closely with you from the early planning stages to design a project that fits your goals and the specific characteristics of the site. Whether it’s a home, multifamily project, or commercial building, this integrated approach helps align design decisions with construction realities early on—keeping the process efficient, coordinated, and on track with the budget from the start.
Do I need to own land before starting the custom home process?
Not at all. We’re happy to build on your land and work with clients wherever they’re located. If you don’t already own property, we specialize in helping clients find the right land and can assist with site selection to ensure it fits both your goals and the home design. In some cases, we may also have access to available lots or subdivisions that may be a good fit.
Can you help me build in a residential subdivision?
Yes. With our development experience and strong local portfolio, we have access to most residential subdivisions throughout Yellowstone County. We can help you secure a lot in an established or new neighborhood and guide you through the process of building a home that fits both the community and your vision.
How long does it take to build a custom home in Montana?
The timeline for building a custom home depends on factors such as the size of the home, design complexity, and Montana’s seasonal weather. In most cases, the full process—from design and permitting through construction—takes approximately 6 to 8 months.
How involved will I be in the building process?
Your level of involvement is entirely up to you. Some clients enjoy being closely involved, while others prefer a more hands-off experience—and we’re comfortable working both ways. Our role is to manage the entire project on your behalf and make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible. We spend significant time upfront helping you make key decisions so that, once construction begins, you can step back, stay informed through regular updates, and focus on what matters most in your life while we take care of the details.
What is the cost per square foot to build a custom home?
The cost per square foot can vary significantly based on materials, finishes, site conditions, and the overall complexity of the design. In Montana, custom homes typically range from $200–$350 per square foot. We work closely with each client to align the design, selections, and budget to create a home that fits both your vision and your financial goals
Can I make changes to the design during construction?
Yes, changes can be made during construction, but they may impact both the project timeline and overall cost. We rely on detailed upfront planning and 3D modeling to minimize the need for mid-project changes and help ensure the final home meets your expectations.
Do you work on a cost-plus or fixed-price basis?
We typically work on a cost-plus basis, which provides transparency throughout the project and allows clients to see exactly where their investment is going. This approach also offers flexibility as the project progresses while helping maintain alignment between scope, quality, and budget.
When should I contact you in the process?
Ideally, we like to be involved early—before plans are finalized or land is purchased—so we can provide guidance on feasibility, budget, and site considerations. That said, we’re happy to step in at any stage of the process and help move things forward.
What areas do you build in?
We build throughout Yellowstone County and surrounding areas and are happy to discuss projects outside the immediate Billings area (such as Red Lodge) depending on scope, timing, and project type.
How do we get started?
The best first step is a conversation. We’ll talk through your goals, timeline, budget, and site to determine whether we’re a good fit and outline clear next steps.
